The home of the pci.ids file
Main -> PCI Devices -> Vendor 0403 -> Device 0403:e731
Name: GFL M503G MAVOLUX B
The following is an excerpt of the ftidport.inf file (Windows driver) with the ids and strings.
Gossen (http://www.gossen-photo.de/) uses the chip in their products and added some information (device ids, device names, = subvendor?).
More information about these devices/drivers can be found at FTDI website:
http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm
and in the document
http://www.ftdichip.com/Documents/AppNotes/AN_107_AdvancedDriverOptions_AN_000073.pdf
There also Chip names can be found, I am not sure, if and how these should be included in 'Name' instead?
I think of something like
USB Serial Port [GFL M503G MAVOLUX B]
or one (?) of
FFT2232H, FT4232H, FT232R, FT245R, FT2232, FT232B, FT245B, T8U232AM, FT8U245AM
(as listed on FTDI website/pdf document)
PortsClassName = "Ports (COM & LPT)"
VID_0403&PID_E731.DeviceDesc="GFL M503G MAVOLUX B"

In a support dokument following information about the chip can be found:
Devices included in the MAVO-USB product range are equipped with a serial port
(USB 1.1, low speed). A USB <-> UART (FT232BM) supplied by Future Technology
Devices Intl. (FTDI) is used as an interface module,
therefore I suggest the Name:
FT232BM [GFL M503G MAVOLUX B]

Using and registering the driver:
rmmod ftdi_sio
modprobe ftdi_sio vendor=0x0403 product=0xe731
yields:
usb 8-4.2: new full speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 27
usb 8-4.2: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
ftdi_sio 8-4.2:1.0: FTDI USB Serial Device converter detected
drivers/usb/serial/ftdi_sio.c: Detected FT8U232AM
usb 8-4.2: FTDI USB Serial Device converter now attached to ttyUSB0

Is it a PCI device and not an USB device instead?

Name: MaWe
Note: wrong Repository (USB ID added), this also applies to devices e730, e731, e732, e733 of same vendor 0403
You are right, this is a usb device. Sorry for the inconvenience. This applies to the others of my entries, too (all but Device 6001): e730, e731, e732, e733
Anyway thanks for all your great work!
