My card has got a NV42 chip (detected by the NOUVEAU video driver), not a NV41. German and english language Wikipedias are inconsistent about which cards use an NV40, NV41 or NV42, sometimes written with suffix "GL", sometimes not.

Can you post the lines about nouveau from your dmesg log?

I was referring to the Xorg's log:

# grep -i nouveau /var/log/Xorg.0.log
[ 67601.755] (--) NOUVEAU(0): Chipset: "NVIDIA NV42"

The previous post contains the whole beginning of the Nouveau related lines of the dmesg output.
I think the relevant line is this one:
[ 3.790382] [drm] nouveau 0000:05:00.0: Detected an NV40 generation card (0x042d00a1)

Please tell me, if anything more could be potentially helpful.

The difference between NV 40/41/42/45 is often quite vague, different sources contradict each other on the chips used on some cards. Thank you for providing proof that this ID is a NV42.
(I do not think there are ID's which are used on both NV42 and NV41 cards. Should there be any of these cards with an NV41 chip, it probably has a different ID.)
